Xray referrals are not always a necessity!

Often, I get to see new patients coming to the clinic expecting to be sent out for an x-ray or MRI of their musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, knee pain, rolled ankle and so on. To their surprise, the majority of times, an imaging is not required and I end up rejecting their request for imaging to “see what’s going on inside “and here is why!

Based on ongoing evidence, medical imaging needs to be correlated with patient’s history and examinations for it to be used as a significant tool in decision making. So, a picture of your knee with arthritis, tears or fluid can just be an insidious or random finding and not be causing your pain. You may have had “that tear” for many years and never had any pain associated with it.

Sports Chiropractors are well trained to diagnose majority of your muscle and bone, “musculoskeletal” conditions, with proper history, orthopedic and neurological examinations. Imaging can be very effective, if you are not responding to a treatment or an immediate referral to another specialist, such as orthopedic surgeon is required.

Overexposing patients to needless radiations such as x-rays and CT scans, are harmful and just wrong.
